It seems to me that that a such a slice is bigger than a quarter slice :-D

As someone who has added just 1'4"x1'5" to the dimensions of a previously
6'x6' deck platform (for the new hot tub!), a little bit around the margin
matters a lot. Adding "just over a foot" to a six foot square adds 50% to
the area.
In your cheese example, a similar triangle with edges 71% (sqrt(1/2)) of the
original will have half the area, which, when centered like you did, will be
shorter just (1-.71)/2~=15% per corner/edge. So basically, taking 15% off
"each edge" of a triangle (roughly speaking) will remove half its area.
